Volunteer For An MLK Day Of Service Project In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Help tackle local problems in Westchester and advance the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of opportunity for all on Saturday for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

The Volunteer Center of United Way is coordinating the events, which honor King’s legacy and include volunteer projects Saturday throughout the county.

The MLK Day of Service coincides with the 57th presidential inauguration, which will also include a National Day of Service.

Creative Clay Project: Volunteers ages 8 and up with an adult will work with an artist to make handcrafted bowls, which will then be given to local organizations to feed the hungry. This is part of the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. Participate at one of the following locations:

DVD Drive: Those interested in helping can drop off DVDs for the Volunteer Center of United Way's DVD drive at the Jacob Burns Film Center, 364 Manville Road, Pleasantville. DVDs can be dropped off when the theater is open: 1 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

“I Have A Dream” Mobiles: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will work alongside participants with disabilities to create “I Have a Dream Clouds” and read books on King’s life and ideas. Then volunteers will bake friendship cookies that will be shared with participants and other volunteers. Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics Inc., Tarrytown.

Make Cards for Veterans: 2:30 - 4 p.m. Volunteers will make cards that will be given to veterans who receive DVDs through the DVD drive at the Jacob Burns Film Center and two that will be given to people receiving soup bowls made through the Bowls for Hunger project. Grinton I. Will Library, 1500 Central Park Ave., Yonkers.

Library Book Hunt: 9:30 a.m. - noon. Hunt for missing library books. New Rochelle Library, 1 Library Plaza, New Rochelle.

Spend Time With Seniors: 2 - 4 p.m. Participate in a variety of activities ranging from playing card games to reading aloud. Somers Manor Nursing Home, 189 Route 100, Somers.

Read to Children: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students in the after-school program through the Nepperhan Community Center will visit a children's hospital to read with patients. Nepperhan Community Center, 342 Warburton Ave., Yonkers.

Build a Banner: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Volunteers will help students from the Saturday Academy program build a banner with a Martin Luther King Day theme. White Plains Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place, White Plains.

Cards for Bowls, Veterans: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Children from the Carver Center's after-school program will make cards that will be given to people receiving soup bowls through the Bowls for Hunger project and veterans who receive DVDs through the DVD drive at the Jacob Burns Film Center. Carver Center, 400 Westchester Ave., Port Chester.

Art Show: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. An intergenerational project, as seniors will commemorate King's life with youth from the Mount Vernon YMCA. The project will consist of King-inspired poetry recitals, discussion and chorus singing. Armory Senior Center, 144 N. Fifth Ave., Mount Vernon.

Paint the Children's Room: 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Volunteers will paint the New Rochelle Library's foyer, the lower-level program space and a few other spaces. New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Library Plaza.

Paint the YMCA: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 1 - 4 p.m. Help paint the residence halls at the YMCA of White Plains, 250 Mamaroneck Ave.

Read to Children: 9 - 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Volunteers will read aloud with young children and model reading together for families. Open Door Family Medical Centers, 155 Main St.

Work in a Greenhouse: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Volunteers will work in the science barge greenhouse cleaning hydroponic systems, plant substrates and equipment. Volunteers are needed to help clean glass, floors and planters as well. Groundwork Hudson Valley, 22 Main St., Yonkers.

Sort and Package Clothes: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Volunteers will help sort and package clothing in the warehouse. Packages contain outfits for a week. Family Services of Westchester, 1 Gateway Plaza, Port Chester.
