This story has been updated.

A large riot of girls from the Pleasantville Cottage School took more than 10 to 15 police officers to break up and ended with two arrests and more pending, according to the Pleasantville Police.

The riot started around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school at 1075 Broadway after two girls had been fighting during the day and the fight escalated to include numerous residents of the school, said Lt. Robert Miliambro.

The girls were hitting and punching each other and trying to break windows to get inside one of the cottages when police arrived, Miliambro said.

Pleasantville police called in reinforcements from numerous agencies to break up the riot, he added.

Officers were still sorting out the reasons for the riot early Wednesday. Two of the girls, ages 16 and 17-years-old were held in a holding cell overnight at the police station until they could be arraigned today, Miliambro said.

The two teens will be charged second-degree riot and one with resisting arrest, police said.

The department anticipates additional arrests on Wednesday, Miliambro said.

School officials describe the incident as a fight, and not a riot.

"The incident last night was a fight, not a riot. No one was injured, said Anna Gold, director of communication and marketing for the school. "We are grateful for the assistance of local law enforcement in helping us deescalate what is a rare occurrence on our campus. We appreciate the community’s understanding that adolescence is a challenging time for all teens, and that their emotions can sometimes run high."

The Cottage School is a residential treatment program for children and young adults.
