Top 2011 Headlines: New Council Member Voted in

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Daily White Plains is reflecting on the news stories that mattered most this year. Here's a look at how the top 10 headlines of 2011 continue to affect White Plains residents:

Dennis Krolian , a trial lawyer and former Bronx assistant district attorney, was the only new representative elected to the all-Democratic Common Council this November:

Krolian will be sworn in before the Common Council meeting begins on Jan. 3. He has been attending most council, committee and board meetings at City Hall to ensure that he's familiar with what's on the agenda.

After being elected, Krolian pledged to make his council seat a priority.

"I’ll put this common council position ahead of my job and I’m sure ahead of many family sacrifices," he said. "I’ll put it ahead of many other obligations that come up in life because it’s more important."

A small airplane crash made headlines last summer when a Manhattan man headed for Montauk reported issues before attempting to land, killing himself and three others. The small, single-engine jet crashed near an MBIA office building at 113 New King St. in Armonk soon after taking off on the afternoon of June 18 from the Westchester Airport.

The victims were identified as Keith Weiner, 63, wife Lisa Weiner, 51, daughter Isabel Weiner, 14, and Isabel's friend Lucy Walsh, 14.

Reports said that Keith Weiner was piloting the jet when he experienced mechanical failure, causing him to radio that he would be turning around to land. On his way back, the jet approached the ground too quickly and clipped nearby trees before crashing and bursting into flames.
