The Week Ahead in White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- There's no shortage of events in White Plains next week. Here's a look at what's happening:

Monday

The library will hold a class on computer mouse and Windows skills for adults from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Pre-registration should be done at the reference desk or by calling (914) 422-1480.

Westchester Pediatric Dentistry will put on a "Chompers Visits the Dentist" puppet show about healthy habits for teeth for 2- to 4-year-olds. Tickets will be distributed a half an hour before the 11 a.m. show begins at Galaxy Hall in the library.

Adults speaking English as a second language are invited to practice conversing in English with others under the guidance of a library facilitator from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Please contact Elizabeth at (914) 422-1485 for more information.

The library will be soliciting advice on programs, events, and resources for teens from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Galaxy Hall. Teens are invited to enjoy pizza will sharing advice.

The library will be hosting a discussion about the best children's and young adult's books of 2011 in the auditorium from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Those interested in testing an e-reader or learning more about iPads, Kindles, and Nooks should contact the library about attending its e-reader demo from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

The Design Review Board will convene in city hall at 7 p.m. 

The Board of Education will discuss annual professional performance reviews at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Education House.

Tuesday:

The library will be registering third- through sixth-graders for an "Act It Out Program" that meets on Jan. 17, 24, and 31 at 10 a.m. Visit The Trove or call (914) 422-1476 for further details.

Computer classes in Spanish will be offered at the library from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

"Time for 2s and 3s" will have a baking day at the library Trove. Parents of 2- and 3-year-olds who wish to participate should arrive a half an hour prior to the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. start times to get tickets.

Children in grades one through five can stop by the library Trove from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for an arts and crafts project related to picture book techniques. 

White Plains will be celebrating National Mentoring Month by honoring youth bureau mentors in the city hall rotunda from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Wednesday:

Parents with 4- or 5-year-olds who want to attend the "To The Moon" story time at the library Trove should arrive a half an hour before the 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. programs begin to get tickets.

Teens are invited to a night of classic board games and snacks at the library from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

The Library Board of Trustees will convene in the library at 7 p.m.

The library will host a class for adults on how to use Microsoft Publisher to make fliers and greeting cards from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.

The Board of Education will be hosting a 2012 to 2013 district budget forum in room B-1 of the high school at 7:30 p.m. 

The White Plains Cable Access Television Commission will meet at 11 Midland Ave. at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday:

Parents are invited to bring 3-year-olds and up to a silly sing-a-long at the library's Galaxy Hall from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. 

The Library Trove will host a Wii fame session for kids in grades one through five from 4:30 to 5:30. However, space is limited an tickets will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis beginning at 4 p.m.

The Friends of the White Plains Youth Bureau and Westchester's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Chapter are hosting a preview of the third annual Harlem Fine Arts Show in the Reckson building from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit local youth programs and the sorority. Benefit tickets can be purchased for $50 by calling Nicolette Johnson at (914) 422-1378. 

Friday:

The library's "Almost Two" and "Just Two!" groups will host a story time for 20- to 29-month-olds from 1 p.m. to 1:30. Tickets will be passed out a half an hour ahead of time.
