A crane from the construction site of the new span of the Tappan Zee Bridge collapsed on the old span ear the Rockland County side around noon on Tuesday, shutting down lanes in both directions for around six hours.

The news spread like wildfire on social media, becoming one of the top trending stories on Twitter, up there with Melania Trump's speech and a shark sighting on Coney Island.

"My heart goes out to anyone injured on the Tappan Zee bridge when the crane collapsed. I hope no one is seriously hurt," Lauren Faith tweeted. "God bless."

On sites like Facebook, where it was also a top trending topic, people were warning others to stay away from the Tappan Zee Bridge and wondering how long the bridge would be closed. Some even posted from the scene.

"They will be lifting barricades so we can U-turn," Karen Ahearn Bowman wrote. "Don't know how long it will be before that happens, grateful that the heat is not sweltering"
