People who are obese but lose just 5 percent of their weight can slash their risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease and increase their "metabolic function," according to a study in the New York Times.

Individuals that lose 5 percent to 10 percent of their body weight benefit health-wise, said the New York Times.

The study involved a clinical trial of 40 obese people who were selected at random with indications of insulin resistance who went on diets to lose 5 percent, 10 percent or 15 percent of their total weight, according to the New York Times.
