Members of both the Yonkers Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a Yonkers Avenue apartment building at approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday after being contacted by Con Edison about equipment and chemicals used to grow the marijuana.
In total, police removed approximately 64 plants, Yonkers Police Sgt. Dean Politopoulos said on Thursday. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made and no injuries were reported. Police are currently waiting on lab analysis to determine exactly how much marijuana was confiscated.
The incident forced the evacuation of the building and shut down Yonkers Avenue East between Nepperhan Avenue and Oak Street on Wednesday as police investigated the scene, removed the plants and equipment.
According to a News12 report, the perpetrators used a “sophisticated system that siphoned the building’s electrical lines for power and used liquid chemicals to fertilize the plants.”
