Small animals can rest easy now that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law a bill that requires pet dealers to provide consumers with instructions on how to care for them.
The bill, which takes effect in 90 days, requires instructions for such animals as hamsters, chinchillas, guinea pigs, gerbils, rabbits, mice and rats, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.
Instructions will also be required when people buy amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the bill requires the retailer to send a copy of its instruction manual each year with the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, added the Democrat & Chronicle.
