The barriers, which should be completed this month, are treated with a sound-absorbing material to further reduce traffic noise in the nearby community.
Work will also continue on the westbound bridge's transparent acrylite noise barriers on the Rockland side. The materials are designed to deflect sound waves and provide a perceivable noise reduction.
Other construction taking place on the bridge include the installation of overhead gantries that will hold variable lane use and electronic message signs, as well as traditional exit signs.
The signs will inform motorists of accidents and direct them away from closed lanes, reducing the potential for other incidents.
In addition, construction of the walls for the Thruway Authority’s new maintenance facility in Tarrytown will go up this week. The state-of-the-art building will offer instant access to the bridge for Thruway personnel responsible for maintenance, operations, and security. The facility is expected to open in 2018. Bridge maintenance teams currently operate from a temporary facility near exit 12 in West Nyack.
