WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Lexington Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Water Street in White Plains now have bicycle lanes to serve as "traffic calming tools," Mayor Thomas Roach said in a statement.
The new lanes, positioned on the right side of the three streets, are for commuters and recreational cyclists. They create a loop connecting the residential areas of the city to the downtown area, train station and Bronx River path.
Dedicated bike lanes have been discussed for thirty years, and we finally made it happen," the mayor's statement said. "Bike lanes are a low-cost way to implement traffic calming tools."
On wide streets, bike lanes will help make it safer to cross the street by slowing down traffic. They will also remind drivers to look before turning or opening car doors, among other safety, health, environmental and traffic benefits.
