Lacey Spears, 27, was convicted in March of killing her son, Garnett Spears, by causing him to overdose on sodium.
Spears, a former Rockland County resident, checked her son into Nyack Hospital for seizures on January 17 of last year. Garrett Spears was air-lifted to Westchester Medical Center two days later when is sodium levels spiked without any medical explanation. He died on January 23, the district attorney said.
Doctors at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the WMC to suspect Lacey Spears of harming her son prompting their call to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
During the investigation into Garrett Spears' condition, feeding bags containing extraordinary amounts of sodium were recovered from the Spears home, the district attorney said.
“Throughout his short life, Garnett Spears was forced to suffer through repeated hospitalizations, unneeded surgical procedures and ultimately poisoning with salt, all at the hands of the one person who should have been his ultimate protector: his mother," DiFiore said in a statement. "Using the child’s “illnesses” to self aggrandize herself, Lacey Spears’ actions directly lead to her son’s tortured death.
"Although the sentence imposed today by the Court is lengthy, we will continue to ensure that his mother is held accountable and that justice for Garnett Spears will be served in his memory.”
