WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - More than 500 people remain without power after Hurricane Sandy ripped through White Plains.
The 583 people in the dark as of 10:33 a.m. Friday is a decrease from the 1,301 Con Edison customers without power as of 5:30 a.m. Thursday. The utility company services 23,854 customers in White Plains.
Con Ed CEO Kevin Burke issued an apology to customers at a Thursday afternoon press conference while some residents and politicians called for a new utility company in Westchester.
“I am sorry for what happened, I am very sorry for what happened,” Burke said. “We’ve worked on this very hard. We made a significant number of improvements after Hurricane Irene. Unfortunately, this one came in so much greater than what we were planning for.”
Utility companies from around the nation have come to Westchester to help Con Ed get people back on track in what is the company's worst power outage related storm.
