Miss Westchester Not Given Royal Treatment By Nypd, Report Says

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers beauty queen Kristy Abreu, the reigning Miss Westchester, says she and her mother were “treated like animals” by NYPD officers who locked them in a holding cell, laughed at them and permitted another prisoner to taunt them, according to a New York Daily News report.

Kristy Abreu was crowned Miss Westchester in September 2012. Shown here, following her win, she was honored at Yonkers City Hall.

Abreu, 19, and her mother, Kendy Paredes, 38, say they were subjected to invasive frisks after city police officers stopped their car for a minor traffic violation in Harlem on May 5 at around 9 p.m., the report said.  They were never charged with any crime, the Daily News said.

They now intend to sue the city for $210 million over their treatment, the newspaper said.

The incident apparently was caused by a computer glitch that made NYPD officers think the car Abreu was in was stolen, according to the report.  While in custody, police officers took away Abreu’s Miss Westchester sash and crown, she told the Daily News.

New York City lawyers declined to comment Tuesday, the Daily News said.

Abreu was crowned Miss Westchester in September 2012.  She was later honored at Yonkers City Hall and proclaimed to use her beauty queen platform to raise awareness for breast cancer and cyber bullying.
