Man Given Probation In Tappan Zee Joint Suicide Case

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The Ithaca man who jumped naked with his girlfriend off the Tappan Zee Bridge in a joint suicide attempt was sentenced Monday in Westchester County Court to five years probation with continued mental health treatment.

Christopher Shears, 45, survived the July 12 fall, but his girlfriend Alfa Choice, 29, did not. He pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter, a felony.

The Ithaca couple, originally from the Bronx, climbed naked atop a Chevrolet Tahoe that was stopped in the southbound lane and held hands. The woman jumped or fell first into the Hudson River and the man followed. Shears was found in critical condition, but survived.
