WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Westchester County legislators has approved a $340,000 bond act for White Plains' Cranberry Lake Preserve.

Michael Smith (R-Mount Pleasant, North Castle, Greenburgh) and other legislators passed the bond act during a special meeting of the Westchester County Board of Legislators. The bond will finance the design of a new nature center, associated infrastructure and site work at Cranberry Lake Preserve, a 190-acre park operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.

The park serves more than 11,000 visitors annually and provides outdoor programs for more than 40 schools and Scout groups throughout the year, county officials said.

“I am glad that legislators on both sides of the political aisle unanimously joined me in passing the first phase of a capital project that further enhances Cranberry Lake Preserve, a jewel in our community that serves residents from across Westchester and the Hudson Valley," Smith said. "This project will help to ensure that staff members are able to offer their educational resources in a safe and adequate space, particularly for our children.”

The $340,000 bond is part of a multi-year plan to fund improvements. An additional $3.05 million is slated to be reviewed for approval in 2015, officials said.

“Cranberry Lake Preserve continues to contribute to Westchester’s regional attractiveness and success," Smith said. "I could not be more pleased to see this project move forward.”
