WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Curing mats caught on fire Wednesday at the Westy Self Storage being built on Westmoreland Avenue as construction workers were preparing to toss them out.
Deputy Chief Mark Farrell said he received a call about the fire around 12:10 p.m. while he was out on the road. He and about 11 other firefighters had the flames on the fourth floor of 179 Westmoreland Ave. put out within 10 minutes.
"They were actually going to throw the mats out the window into the dumpster anyways," said Farrell. "There was no damage to the building because the mats were the only thing in there."
A curing mat is used during construction to help concrete maintain proper temperature and moisture.
Construction on the self storage complex was resumed by 1 p.m. Tuesday.
This story will be updated. Check back tomorrow for the neighbors' take on the fire.
