Final Fasny Public Hearing Moved To White Plains High School

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the Sept. 8 public hearing is the second of three to be held. It is the final public hearing.

Hundreds have packed the White Plains City Hall courtroom and hallways for each of the FASNY public hearings.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The last of three public hearings on the French-American School of New York’s (FASNY) proposed White Plains campus will be held at the White Plains High School auditorium Monday, Sept. 8.

All prior public hearings on the matter have been held at City Hall in the second-floor courtroom with overflow seating on the second and first floors where the public could watch the live stream on projectors.

At the July 7 hearing, as well as the public hearings held in 2012 on FASNY’s environmental impact statement, more than one hundred residents filled the space.

Several residents complained that the space at City Hall was inadequate and uncomfortable, especially for the elderly and those with arthritis.

Most of the public hearings have gone more than three hours, some even past midnight.

The White Plains City Council declared FASNY’s final environmental impact statement complete in late 2013, allowing the process to move forward on the former Ridgeway Golf Club.

Taking into account the council’s recommendations, FASNY reduced the maximum number of students from 1,200 to 950, moved the main entrance from the residential Ridgeway Avenue to the “arterial roadway” North Street and made busing mandatory in an effort to reduce FASNY traffic by more than 50 percent.

The private school has also asked the city to discontinue Hathaway Lane from Ridgeway Avenue to Gedney Esplanade, which it says is necessary if the entrance is to be on North Street.

The council decided to hold separate public hearings for FASNY’s application for a special permit to operate the school and its request for the discontinuance of Hathaway Lane. The same format will be followed at the hearing Sept. 8.

A sign-up sheet will be available starting at 5 p.m. on that day outside the auditorium for all those who wish to speak a the public hearings.
