Ex-Yankees Trainer Offers Fitness Services To Baby Boomers In White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Since its opening in 2011, former Yankees strength coach Dana Cavalea's fitness center, ML Strength in White Plains, has been a haven for athletes.

However, Cavalea noticed people ages 40 and over were beginning to come into the center and ask for training to keep them fit. So, Cavalea decided to start off 2014 by launching a set of baby boomer-targeted programs to accommodate his newest consumer base.

"We've seen some really good results," Cavalea said. "Going after the 40-plus group and giving them a positive team unity experience creates nice outlet for those people. I've created a system to help them individually to meet their goals."

Cavalea said many of his older male clients have a fantasy of what it's like to be on a sports team, and given his pro-baseball experience, he can really capitalize on that.

"I love being able to take pro athlete technique, which was my bread and butter for the past 12 years, and apply it to the general population. The programs at ML Strength are an extraction from the sports environment," he said.

Cavalea said the techniques you'll encounter are not ones you'll find at "normal gyms," on the street. The coaches go through a 12-week sports medicine training program before they even get on the floor.

His greatest success story so far is a 67 year old man who enjoyed playing fantasy baseball camp. After confronting the need for a possible shoulder surgery, Cavalea put him in a physical training and massage based program, along with exercise.

"He successfully avoided surgery and has been to four camps since. He no longer has arm problems," he said.

The most general program you'll encounter at ML Strength is the group sports conditioning class.

Pro-training is second level, where you get your own custom program including a full 60-75 minute body assessment to make sure your joints are working. Additionally, they'll assess your posture and overall strength.

The Elite category is a one-on-one program with your own coach, and is the highest end.
