Developer Asks White Plains To Rezone Former High School Land

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The White Plains Planning Board is considering a zoning change that could open a 16-acre tract that was once home to a Catholic high school and a religious order to substantial residential development, according to The Examiner.

WP Development NB, LLC, owner of 52 N. Broadway, has proposed plans to build two 10-story buildings with 400 rental units and below-ground parking; 66 suites of housing for Pace University graduate students; a parking lot to which Pace would have the right; and a 93,000-square-foot assisted living facility with 65 assisted living units and 30 memory care units, according to The Examiner.

The land was formerly home to Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy and the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, according to The Examiner, which reported that WP Development says it could, “by right of ownership,” build as many as 467 rental units on the property at any time without consideration for open space.

The proposed plan, however, would leave about 2.7 acres of open space near North Broadway and would maintain a historic chapel and the Mapleton House as landmarks, according to The Examiner, which reported that the Sisters of the Divine Compassion would have rights to the Chapel 150 days of the year for three hours a day.
