WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Ongoing construction along Interstate 287 has Harrison drivers turning their heads and wondering what to expect. Workers and construction vehicles have become casual sights near the end of North Street where I-287 can be picked up.
"I drive by this almost every day," Harrison resident Greg Boulton said. "I have no idea what they're trying to accomplish, but I hope it's done sooner rather than later."
The heavy roadwork is part of a large project aiming to create three new bridges to the region and taking down two older overpasses.
Workers of the Ecco III Enterprises said the overpass that brings drivers to Harrison's Anderson Hill Road will be replaced by a new bridge being built directly next to the current one. A similar replacement will occur to the White Plains Ave. overpass, which has been reduced temporarily to a single, one-way lane heading north. Once the closed lane is renovated, workers will switch lanes to rebuild the other side until both lanes are complete, allowing for a two-lane overpass.
Major aspects of the interstate construction include the moving of gas mains under the ground, workers said. New structures being put in the ground required the moving of the mains to avoid interference.
The renovations are being undertaken by two Yonkers contracting companies that nearly split the overall costs. Ecco III Enterprises and the Yonkers Contracting Company split the work into phases and have alternated their participation in the finished product.
Ecco III was given the contract for the bridge work in March, 2010.
