Bunge To Give White Plains Students Lesson, Lunch

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — White Plains-based food company Bunge will hold a cooking and nutrition lesson for the students of the White Plains Youth Bureau's Greening Project on Monday, said Patricia Staffiero, youth employment supervisor for the Youth Bureau.

Bunge is a global agribusiness whose chefs travel the country in the Mobile Oil Experts food truck to promote healthy cooking using Bunge products, such as its trans-fat-free frying oils and shortenings.

Bunge has teamed with the Youth Bureau's Greening Project over the past two years to promote healthy cooking.

The Greening Project, which Staffiero said began more than 30 years ago, has 12 students from White Plains High School who participate each year by, among other things, maintaining a garden at Baldwin Farms on Hall Avenue. The harvests are donated to the White Plains Ecumenical Food Pantry.

"It has evolved from a summer job program where kids would work on painting fire hydrants and doing projects around White Plains to an environmental education program where they learn about the environment and hydroponics," Staffiero said.

Monday, the students will learn:

  • nutrition based on U.S. Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines and how to make smart food choices;
  • tips for preparing nutritious and tasty meals at home;
  • healthy recipes with hands-on instruction from Bunge chefs.

Bunge chefs Adam Moore and Zach Hovan will also make a nutritious lunch for the students in the Mobile Oil Experts food truck. The lunch includes ancient grains salad with wild mushrooms, crisp apples and virgin canola-sherry vinaigrette; sweet potato french fries; tempura green beans; fresh fish tacos with pickled cilantro slaw; and seasonal fruit parfait.

The lesson will take place at the Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place.
