For a second year Bicycle Sundays was in jeopardy, and for a second year, the Friends of Westchester County Parks and Con Edison provided $40,000 to underwrite the program, which has been ongoing since 1974.

When the Friends of Westchester County Parks learned Bicycle Sundays may be cut from the 2012-2013 county budget, it searched for a private donor to match the $20,000 it planned to put up. Con Edison stepped up then, and did so again in 2013, Sandy Miller, director of public affairs for Con Edison in Westchester County, has said. Miller is also a member of the Friends of Westchester County Parks board.

The costs cover staffing and safety, Kathleen O’Connor, county parks commissioner, has said.

Bicycle Sundays draw more than 60,000 participants each year for the 13.1 mile round-trip, which starts at the Westchester County Center in White Plains and goes south to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers. Participants can enter and exit through many different parts of the route, which also pass through Hartsdale/Greenburgh, Scarsdale, Eastchester and Tuckahoe.

Bicycle Sunday take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and are set for the following dates:

  • May 5, 12 and 19
  • June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30
  • September 8, 15, 22 and 29

Parking is available at the Westchester County Center for $5.
