Buchwald worked with Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and other members of the state Legislature to get White Plains added to the program.
White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, White Plains Youth Bureau Executive Director Frank Williams, White Plains Business Improvement District Executive Director Kevin Nunn, Hudson Valley Regional Representative for the New York State Department of Labor Thom Kleiner and Work Force Development Coordinator for the Business Council of Westchester Ebony White, joined Buchwald at the announcement on Wednesday.
New York State Youth Works Program encourages local businesses to hire and train at-risk youth ages 16-24 by offering businesses who partake in the program a $2,500 tax credit for part-time employees and $5,000 for full time employees. The program gives young adults the opportunity to network and prepare for life in the workforce. White Plains residents can be hired anywhere in Westchester County.
“I fought to include White Plains in the New York Youth Works program because it both provides employment to our most vulnerable young men and women, and helps our businesses with great incentives to hire them,” said Assemblyman Buchwald. “We need to continue finding ways to improve our economy, and this program is a step in the right direction for White Plains residents and businesses across Westchester.”
In 2012, 1,270 businesses participated in the program and 12,866 young adults were hired across the state.
“With summer jobs approaching, this program gives us an exciting way to keep our children active and engaged in their community,” said Frank Williams Jr., executive director of the White Plains Youth Bureau. “Showing our young adults what it takes to run a successful business will help inspire them to reach their full potential.”
