After departing on Wednesday for the D.C., 22 of 68 Isaac E. Young Middle School students that were on the trip suffered from a stomach illness, reportedly the result of a potential nanovirus.

The 22 students were hospitalized as a precautionary measure, with 10 of the eighth-grade students treated for dehydration. The exact cause of the illnesses remains unclear, but students were expected to return home to New Rochelle on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, the district said that throughout the week, parents have been informed “every step of the way” and that students were in no immediate danger.
