Speakers at the ceremony included Mayor Tom Roach, retired Lt. James Donahoe, a long-time friend and colleague, as well as his son, Greg DeLanoy.
His wife, Joanne, unveiled the street sign at the corner of Mamaroneck and Maple that reads Billy DeLanoy Way. An additional sign at Mamaroneck and Carhart avenues was put up Monday to designate the block from both ends.
DeLanoy was a lifelong resident of White Plains who died unexpectedly of a heart attack Feb. 6, 2013. He followed in his family footsteps by joining the fire department in 1978, as his grandfather, father, uncles and cousins had done, attaining deputy chief status. Greg has been with the department since 2003.
DeLanoy also was active in the community, helping campaigns for mayor and district attorney, along with restarting the area's American Legion baseball program while umpiring games across the county.
“Some firefighters would say that Bill was the heart and soul of the White Plains Fire Department because of his commitment to the city and this family, and they would be right. The world and everyone he touched is brighter for it. We will keep Bill close to our hearts and remember him fondly,” said Fire Chief Richard Lyman.
