White Plains Patient Makes Healing Magical

Alan Lowenfels is a month shy of his five year anniversary of being cured from prostate cancer. He credits visualization, the da Vinci Prostate Surgery Program, and the medical team under Dr. Seth Lerner at White Plains Hospital for his good prognosis.

He said the robotic procedure combined with visualization, a meditation technique, are the two main reasons his recovery went so smoothly. After speaking at White Plains Hospital’s Cancer Survivors’ Day this past June, Lowenfels, 64, realized he wanted to take his story on the road to help others.

An investment counselor by day with David Lerner Associates, Lowenfels is dipping back into his past to find a way to help others visualize and heal. Having purchased his first trick from the renowned magician, Louis Tannen, he is creating magic shows that help motivate visualization and healing.

Lowenfels plans to visit hospitals and treatment centers to work with patients and have an impact. “Now I want to stimulate people’s own mind to help them get through an ordeal.” He says the visualization techniques he learned pre and post surgery at White Plains Hospital made the healing process a much quicker and more comfortable one.

On a second quest, Lowenfels wants to take the pain and confusion out of talking about cancer. He has begun speaking and writing about the subject. He said it took him almost two weeks to be able to use the word cancer in a sentence about himself.

When he finally began telling people, he invited them to be on his team, telling them he may need a ride or a meal. This gave everyone a positive direction to take. Lowenfels pointed to the way many people react when they hear someone has cancer. They often tell you their worst experience first and that is not a great thing for a new patient to hear every day.

The father of two grown boys, Lowenfels credits his significant other, Anna, family and friends with being a wonderful support system. He says he smiles much more these past five years and has learned to truly appreciate life.
