White Plains Mother Sends Son Care Package

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Dayvon Smith’s Marine Corps unit now serving in the Middle East received a care package from CSEA Westchester County Local 860, the Civil Service emplyees union the young lance corporal’s mother Sonya belongs to.

Dayvon joined the Marines after graduating from White Plains High School in 2010. After members of the CSEA's Community Action Committee learned his unit had been deployed to the Middle East, they decided to show their support by creating care packages with snacks, movies, toiletries and other items, which were bought with fundraising proceeds. They recently sent the package overseas.

“We are so grateful for service men and women like Dayvon, so we decided to show that appreciation by sending them some of the comforts of home,” said John Staino, CSEA Local 860 president. “This is the first year we’ve undertaken military care packages as one of our service projects, but it’s a tradition we intend to continue.”

During high school, Dayvon played football and volunteered in the community. He was last stationed stateside at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The CSEA, which represents nearly 12,000 Westchester County workers, is now working on a school supply giveaway.
