Michael Jacobs is the associate chair of the English Department at the Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts. He was chosen for the award because of his work organizing the Conference on Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking held in October in New York City.

Jacobs has presented papers and lectures on literature, pedagogy and film across the country. He has taught at Berkeley since 2002.

A former journalist, Jacobs earned his bachelor degree in media studies and master's in humanities at the University of Buffalo. He holds a doctorate in English from St. John's University.

The Faculty of the Year Award is given each year for excellence in scholarship and service.
