NORWALK, Conn. -- White Plains resident Pedro Davila and his intricate stone lighthouse are vying for the $1,500 grand prize in The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s 13th annual “Festival of Lighthouses Contest,” which opens on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Davila, a mason, enters the lighthouse contest frequently, and has had a run of success, winning the contest in 2003, 2005 and 2008. He also boasts third place finishes in 2010 and 2012.

This year, Davila's "Black Rock” features precisely detailed laid-in stone. It’s a traditionally shaped, conical lighthouse, with several wooden windows, set on a rocky base that even has a stone stairway.

“Each year we are amazed by the time and effort that our contestants put into their lighthouses,” Judith Bacal, the aquarium’s exhibits director, said in a statement. “The bar gets raised every year on design and craftsmanship. In turn, having all these smart and creative pieces of art on display only makes the experience of visiting The Maritime Aquarium during the holiday season even more engaging, enjoyable and memorable.”

The lighthouse contest works like a juried art show except that the thousands of Maritime Aquarium visitors are the jury. Visitors can follow the homemade beacons through the galleries and cast a vote for their favorite.

The 2014 “Festival of Lighthouses Contest” is free with Maritime Aquarium general admission, which is $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for youths (13-17) & seniors (65+), and $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12.

The aquarium is located at 10 N. Water St. in South Norwalk. For more information visit www.maritimeaquarium.org.
