The 10-week program meets Saturday mornings and helps first-graders to become stronger readers and writers, she said in a statement. The students are split into groups of five and work with teachers to read from “big” books, discuss the stories and brainstorm ideas to write their own tales.

The program is a collaboration between the center and Centro Hispano, both based in White Plains. It is funded by the Margaret T. Canning Foundation.

Every other Saturday, parents get in on the action by taking part in a one-hour group and visiting their children’s classroom to observe so they can reinforce the lessons at home.

In addition to individual tutoring and group workshops, the center offers a Summer Literacy Program to help children maintain literacy skills while school is out of session.

Anyone who can provide funding may call Sister St. John Delany at 914-422-4135.
