While still early in his career, Himmelfarb has “made…our local history collection come alive for the community,” says Kathleen Degyansky, White Plains Public Library assistant director, who nominated Himmelfarb for the recognition.
Himmelfarb has created a popular local history roundtable where people meet to discuss a variety of community topics, from urban renewal to affordable housing.
He also spearheaded a project called “People and Stories,” which is comprised of trained volunteers who record the stories of a wide variety of White Plains residents for posterity, amplifying voices that may have previously been unheard.
For the past 15 years, Library Journal has annually selected approximately 50 people in the library field who are innovative, creative and making a difference.
“Movers and Shakers” recognizes the people who are moving public, school, academic and special libraries ahead.
