WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Research is the first step toward planning a kitchen renovation according to Kitchen & Bath Source owner Rob Stonbely.
Stonbely, who has owned the White Plains business for over 30 years including his previous ownership of Nuway Kitchen Showrooms, said there are three essential tasks you should undertake when starting your kitchen or bath renovation project.
- Determine what pleases your eye: “To accomplish this I suggest you invest in a few different magazines,’’ Stonbely said. “Select photos that are visually pleasing and leave them around your home so you can live with the looks. Start to figure out what inspires you about the photos. Then note what you like in each picture: color or finish, design, door style, the use of textures. In some cases you may be drawn to only one element or you may like the entire look. Getting familiar with your likes and dislikes will make your decision-making process much easier when you begin to visit design showrooms. Remember to bring the photos to the showroom. They will help the designers quickly target your particular taste and will save you a lot of time."
- Use the internet to start researching local showrooms: “One of the key factors in selecting the right firm is reputation and presence,’’ Stonbely said. “Kitchen and bath remodelers should be established companies with a showroom and staff of people to support you and your project. Be sure to ask the designer how long they have actually been designing kitchens. You do not want someone without any experience designing your space. You want a seasoned person who has been involved in a lot of projects and has experience designing many different types and styles of kitchens. An experienced designer can properly provide solutions and recommendations for your home and is comfortable thinking outside of the box. In my opinion the company should offer installation services of the products they sell. Again, this guarantees you will be working with experienced trade professionals familiar with the materials, ensuring a quality installation and a great end result.”
- Make sure you feel comfortable with the designer and showroom environment: “A lot of this has to do with the way you feel from the moment you enter the showroom,’’ he said. “A showroom is where the business gets to showcase their work and introduce themselves to the public. Take note of workmanship of the displays, the staff’s attitude and the overall organization of the business. The appearance and vibe of the showroom is a good example of the quality of work and level of professionalism you can expect. Make sure the business is properly licensed and insured. These people will be working in your home and you only want reputable and professional people in your home.”
