Benjamin Van Doren is one of the Cornell University students who competed in the annual World Series of Birding on May 10 in New Jersey. The Cornell Lab hosted three student teams known as "The Redheads" was the largest group in the school's history.

Van Doren was valedictorian of the White Plains High School class of 2012.

"He is a member of the Cornell team that birded the entire state of New Jersey in an effort to tally the greatest number of bird species over a manic 24-hour period," representatives said. "This is about much more than bragging rights, though. The team also raised more than $50,000 to support undergraduate research in bird studies and conservation."
