White Plains Farmers Market Opens Wednesday

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- John Willis decided to peruse the White Plains Farmers Market on Court Street, which opened Wednesday.

The White Plains resident was walking when he saw Court Street, from Martine Avenue to Main Street, was blocked off. In between, a farmers market had sprung up with a block-full of fresh food vendors.

The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays through Nov. 21, said Pascal Bensidoun, whose father, grandfather and great-grandfather managed open-air markets in their native Paris.

"In Paris, public markets are synonymous with French culture and style, as expressed through fresh food and drink, flowers, clothing, arts and crafts and jewelry sold by local vendors in open air," according to the Bensidoun website.

Pascal's father, Rolland, brought him and his brother Sebastian into the family business, and they now contract with more than 80 markets in Paris. In the last 10 years, they have expanded to Chicago, Stamford and New York. The White Plains market has been operating since 2004.

"I enjoy it. It's fresh, entrepenurial and its nice to have it," said Charles Katz, a White Plains resident who has shopped at the market in past years.
