White Plains Dad Defeats the Odds

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - If you were to ask his son Jacob, “Is your dad a millionaire?” Jarrod Brown is fairly certain his answer would be, “definitely.”

He’s not, and there have been times when the White Plains resident has juggled four jobs to make ends meet as a single father, but Jacob has always enjoyed a financially-stable life, and that is what’s important.

“To him, it’s never an issue of ‘I can’t do this, I can’t do that,' ” Brown said. “I don’t want him to ever be afraid to ask me for anything.”

Brown has been able to take an active role in Jacob’s life as a volunteer for his elementary school’s Parent Teacher Association, and as the coach of his flag football, basketball, and baseball teams.

“There are times when I have gotten to work at 10 a.m. and left at 4 p.m. because my son needed me in the morning and afternoon,” he said. “Nothing is more important than a relationship with my child.”

Brown was only 25 years old when his son was born and divorced a few years later.  Brown, who has full custody of Jacob, said the now fifth-grader at Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School in White Plains has become a great person regardless of any trouble at home, which makes him the real hero of the family.

He added that local administrators like Rob Janowitz, who is the vice principal of Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School, have been instrumental in aiding Jacob's academic career.

“It really takes a village to raise a child,” Brown said. “I couldn't have done this alone without my friends in the area and his teachers.”

In addition to his full-time job at Class Action Refund in Harrison, Brown is about to launch his own business on the side. As a certified sports and model agent, he is representing his first client, a relatively unknown player for the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers.

Brown hopes to soon represent other professional athletes as part of his business, Jacob Investors. When asked how he came up with the name of his new venture, he said the source of his inspiration was a no-brainer.

“I’m investing in someone’s future,” he said simply.

Brown has since gotten remarried, and said his new wife Juliane is now playing an instrumental role in Jacob's life as well.
