WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Kwanzaa Collaborative, a group of White Plains organizations and businesses, will hold a Kwanzaa celebration at the Thomas H. Slater Center, 2 Fisher Court, White Plains on Monday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.

The Kwanzaa Collaborative was created to educate and raise awareness about Kwanzaa in White Plains.

The program includes traditional drumming by Kofi, Sankofa dance and drum ensemble and performances by YWCA GEMS, White Plains Youth Bureau, H.I.P. H.O.P. and the White Plains Steppers. A free cultural potluck dinner will be provided by ShopRite following the program.

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that honors African heritage in African-American culture. It was created in 1966 by Africana studies professor Maulana Karenga as the first specifically African-American holiday.

Kwanzaa celebrates what its founder called the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Monday's celebration will focus on the principle of "purpose."

The Kwanzaa Collaborative was founded by the White Plains Community Unitarian Church.
