MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Guidance Center of Westchester is looking for musical instruments for a program that already benefits more than 150 local adults suffering with mental illness.

The instruments are for new music courses that are part of the agency’s PROS (Personalized Recovery-Oriented Services) program, a rehabilitation effort designed to allow people with mental illness to achieve life goals through treatment, according to a statement from the agency.

Music courses are just some of many offered with the PROS program, according to agency officials, who said other skills such as goal setting, integrated health and wellness and basic living skills courses also are offered.

Music courses often allow participants to “discover music in a way to reduce anxiety while increasing focus,” the agency said, adding that counselors use music lessons as medium for participants to express their creativity and gain confidence.

“Our new music programs are incredibly popular,” says Vito Tomanelli, LMSW, a PROS recovery counselor. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of instruments and our participants can’t afford to buy them. That’s why we’re looking for donations.”

The agency is in need of gently used guitars including bass, classical and string instruments and percussion instruments. They also need microphones, recording devices, PA systems, speakers, lighting equipment, video recording devices, and turntables.

Anyone able to donate should contact PROS@TheGuidanceCenter.org or 914-613-0700, EXT. 7062.

The Guidance Center of Westchester is located at 256 Washington St., Mount Vernon.
