Trainjotting Crowns Hawthorne Worst Train Station

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – It's official. Mount Pleasant is home to both the best and worst train station in the area.

That according to Michael Malone and his commuting blog trainjotting.com. Malone surveyed readers and fellow commuters from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to find out which train station in the tri-state area is the worst.

Hawthorne took home the crown for all the wrong reasons. In Malone's contest titled, "Crappiest Train Station in the Tri-State", many factors went in to Hawthorne winning, or losing, the contest. He writes in his post, "An unfavorable mix of sidewalk-free approach streets, a run-down appearance, unpleasant kids from neighboring reform school and general unacceptable level of cleanliness, wrote commenters, doomed Hawthorne."

Recently, Malone spoke with Hawthorne resident and SNY.tv senior editor Ted Berg about his experiences with the Hawthorne Train Station. Berg said, "The worst thing has to be the ever-present stench of urine. Seriously: who keeps peeing in the stairwell?"

In the summer of 2008, Trainjotting named Pleasantville the "Best Damn Commuter Town Period" for reasons such as walkable streets, parking and nearby amenities such as the Iron Horse Grill. The Pleasantville and Hawthorne train stations are only 3.5 miles away from each other and run on the same Harlem Metro-North Railroad.

Malone said that Trainjotting received about 50 submissions of train stations from all over the tri-state area. Hawthorne won the survey by receiving 20 percent of the votes. Fellow Westchester County station at North White Plains finished in second place followed by Waterbury and Stamford stations in Connecticut.
