State Grant 'Establishes' White Plains Teen Chorus

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A "Glee"-like teen chorus in White Plains has received a state grant that its music director Norine Castine hopes will solidify it as an institution in the community.

"It’s a really big thing for us because it feels like it establishes the group really well," said Castine, who is also music director for Trinity Church in White Plains, where the Westchester Glee Chorus is based.

The $1,000 Arts Alive Project Grant is funded by the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature. It is administered by ArtsWestchester, also in White Plains.

After one full year, the chorus will hold its second performance Feb. 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church at 430 North St.

The seven students, from White Plains High School, North Salem High School, Highlands Middle School and Our Lady of Sorrows School in White Plains, have prepared a mix of 20 solos, small group and four-part choral settings of popular music. The singers will be accompanied by a four-piece band of musicians from Manhattan.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students.
