Son Follows in Father's 'Nutual' Fund Footsteps

When Daniel Lerner was in first grade, his teacher asked the students what their parents did for a living. When it was his turn, he proudly proclaimed, “My dad is in nutual funds.”

“I couldn’t say my m’s,” said a smiling Lerner inside the White Plains office for David Lerner Associates. His father built the company and now Daniel serves as Senior Vice President.

During a hiatus from working for his father he headed out to experience the industry from the ranks of Charles Schwab and Beaer Stearns.  While working for his father pushes him to achieve his best, it was in Los Angeles that Lerner really found himself.

“When I was in Los Angeles I learned how truly drawn I was to this business and that I had a lot to bring to the table when I decided to come home,” said Lerner.

Seeking success for clients necessitates a passion for the business according to Lerner. "We're strong believers in personal service. Your money is important to you and that makes it important to us," he said.

Lerner is the father of triplets and while he has enjoyed life in a family business, he doesn’t want to force them to follow his path. He would prefer they follow their own hearts and talents. “But if that leads them here, that would make their dad very happy,” said Lerner.

The day may also come that his children have to explain what their father does for a living. “I imagine they’ll say my father drives around and speaks to a lot of people for a living,” Lerner said. He laughed at the notion of what letters they might have trouble with.
