WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Adolescence can be a stressful time for teenagers trying to balance the pressures of school, sports and a changing body.
Thats why they need doctors who can offer support, encouragement and the medical know-how to help quell their anxieties, said Dr. Karen Browner-Elhanan, the medical director at BridgeSpan Medicine in White Plains.
Adolescents are forging their way into young adulthood and have decisions to make about different paths to take, and they need the guidance of professionals to help them do it, she said.
BridgeSpan Medicine, which was born out of a partnership with Westchester Park Pediatrics in 2010, tends to the primary care of adolescents and adults ages 10 to 26 years old.
Browner-Elhanan and her team of adolescent medicine specialists work to help answer questions about everything from puberty to sexuality to nutrition management, while also providing them with additional resources pertaining to preventative medicine and contraception. Browner-Elhanan even provides sports-related medical care, including head injuries and concussions.
We present patients with a friendly environment and discuss with them the need to be open and provide us with adequate medical history so we can care for them well, she said.
Browner-Elhanan was listed as one of New York Magazines Best New York Doctors in 2011. In addition to her 20 years of experience with children and adolescents in the United States and Israel, she is board certified in pediatric and adolescent medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Browner-Elhanan said that working with each of her patients comes with its own set of rewards.
I love working with my patients and its rewarding to get to know them, she said. "I strive to connect with all of them."
