WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Phyllis Chambers took her children on a StoryWalk at the White Plains Library. The exhibit features each page of the book "Long Shot" by NBA player Chris Paul on large foam boards.
The 13-page children's book, illustrated by Frank Morrison, is displayed in the library's second-floor gallery through Aug. 31 for the StoryWalk, a program of the children's library, also known as the TROVE.
"The reason why this book was selected was because the theme of our summer reading program this summer is 'Dream Big, Read,' and we build programming around it," said children's librarian Terry Rabideau. "I read the book and I thought, 'Wow, this is great; it's along our theme and it has a great message.'"
"Long Shot" tells the story of a young Chris Paul, who was told he was too short to play basketball, but, through hard work and the support of his family and friends, he made the school basketball team.
Paul became an all-American guard at Wake Forest University, Rookie of the Year in his first NBA season with the New Orleans Hornets, and gold medalist as part of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. He is now part of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
"It was inspirational and interesting," said Chambers, whose children Omar and May attend Church Street Elementary School.
Although Omar, 6, and May, 6, aren't basketball fans, both said they enjoyed the book.
They also have an opportunity to win a basketball through a raffle. Families can pick up a form at the TROVE to take with them while on the StoryWalk. After making all 14 stops on the StoryWalk, kids will receive a prize and be entered into the drawing.
This is the fourth StoryWalk the White Plains Library has done. The first two were in February and March of 2011 in the TROVE to celebrate Black History Month. Last summer, the StoryWalk was displayed in the windows along the outside of the building.
"Its a great way to present a book, and this book had a great message. You have a dream, you work hard and you can do it," Rabideau said.
