WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Mayor Thomas Roach and the White Plains Common Council recently named Brian LaPlaca the 2013 Youth of the Year.
The announcement was made during the council's November meeting, according to a press release. LaPlaca is a senior at White Plains High School and has a 4.566 GPA and is ranked academically at 22 out of 500 students, according to the release.
"Brian is an intelligent, honest and conscientious young man," representatives said in the press release. "He is popular and well-liked by his teachers and peers for being warm, friendly and courteous. He is always empathetic and considerate about the needs of others. To this end, he has devoted much of his time to community causes."
White Plains officials also noted that LaPlaca is "a student of academic excellence," according to the release.
"He has a demanding schedule taking mostly Honors level, AP and college preparatory courses," representatives said in the release. "He is an A student and will graduate next June with 34 credits, ranked inside the top 5 percent of his very competitive senior class and with an Advanced New York State Regents Diploma with honors. He is a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar and is being given a National Hispanic Recognition Award."
Officials also pointed to LaPlaca's work outside of the classroom.
"He has had a life-long commitment to the Boy Scouts of America. He will soon be recognized as an Eagle Scout due to his acquisition of over 23 Merit Badges and community service projects," representatives said in the release. "He is an active participant in the Mayor’s Youth Council and has volunteered at many events sponsored by the City of White Plains. At school Brian manages to devote time to the Math Club, the Latin Club, and the school newspaper and at football games he is a trumpeter in the marching band. He somehow also manages to help out at and volunteer in the soup kitchen and participate in his church youth group. His list of other community involvement is enormous."
