And so, witih her three kids a bit more self-sufficient (they are ages eight, 12 and 14) and her family's support, she launched Sounds Good Westchester featuring Music Together music and movement classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and the grown-ups who love them.
Classes begin the week of Sept. 28, but registration is open now. Dozens of complimentary classes will start the end of August and go until Sept. 25.
Originally offered to the public in 1987, Music Together pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.
Hamlin, a teacher who always did music on the side, discovered the program 14 years ago and loved it so much she became a registered Music Together teacher.
"I’ve always dreamed about owning my own business, so I bought Music Along The Sound, a business that had already been offering Music Together classes along the Sound Shore, and I’ve turned it into Sounds Good Westchester," she said of her recent acquisition.
What makes her classes different from others is that Hamlin offers them in a wide variety of locations, including assisted living locations where senior residents can participate in the mixed-age classes, giving them a family feel.
Along with intergenerational options, there are also mixed-age classes (children 0-5 years) and a babies option (0-8 months).
Classes will be offered in 10 locations including Harrison, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Rye, and Rye Brook. And no, you don't have to be musically inclined to particpate.
Said Hamlin: "Enthusiastic participation is more important than getting the notes right."
