THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- Westlake High School teacher and play director Phil Cutrone will direct and star in a free performance of a reading of Arthur Miller's classic "All My Sons" at the White Plains Performing Arts Center on Friday, July 18, at 8 p.m.
Cutrone, who has directed the dramas and musicals at Westlake for the past four years, will be supported by some familiar faces and talents as he shares the stage with Westlake alumnus Justin Thomas (class of 2011), Emily Banks ('13) and Sam Stein ('13).
"As the director for the Westlake High School plays, I have always loved working with Westlake students Sam Stein, Justin Thomas and Emily Banks (a Metro Award winner for her role of Mrs. Potts in our 'Beauty and the Beast')," Cutrone said, "Now that they have graduated, to work as a performer with them is spectacular -- such gifted and giving actors. It's a real thrill. I am so comfortable with them, they are such thinking actors."
Cutrone said the venue at White Plains Performing Arts Center can seat about 460 people and is perfect for the "reading" of Miller's play.
"There isn't a bad seat in the house," Cutrone said. "I was lucky enough to perform there a few times, most notably as Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol". I have been a fan of the theater there ever since. I have seen amazing productions, like "Les Mis", and Disney's "On the Record".
The theater is in City Center in White Plains.
The actor/director said "All My Sons" was not a challenge to direct and offers Miller's great writing and dialogue.
"As it is a reading, there is no movement, the emphasis is on voice and facial expressions," he said. "Miller was quite a good captor of true conversation. His dialogue is rich and full of nuance, and he crafted the story of "All My Sons" so beautifully and cleverly that he keeps the audience captivated with his words alone. It is a great piece for actors to perform, and enables them to give a real richness to these troubled characters. I have assembled a brilliant and engaging cast."
