WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Some people in White Plains decided that the movies and shopping would be more exciting than football on Super Bowl Sunday.
At The Westchester Mall, the stores were mostly empty Sunday evening, but there were shoppers who welcomed the lack of crowds. Susan Clark and her two daughters purchased shoes instead of watching the game.
"I used to get excited about the commercials, but now they're on YouTube and you can even preview them," Clark said. "And half-time is Beyonce and we just saw her last week lip-syncing at Obama's inauguration."
"My favorite this year is the Budweiser Clydesdale heartbreaker tear-jerker," she said of the commercials she already watched.
Like Clark, others were unenthusiastic as well by the idea of watching the game. Bob Jones, who was reading at The Espresso Bar outside of Nordstrom said, "I just don't find a group of men running around with a ball interesting."
Jones was planning on going home to do laundry. He said Super Bowl Sunday is just Sunday to him.
Not everyone skipping the game was quite as indifferent to sports, though.
Juan Oliveros is from New Rochelle and went to high school with Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice. Because of that, he said he kind of feels like he should watch, but he's not a football fan.
"I might go home and watch soccer -- the real football," Oliveros said. He has only watched American football live in a stadium.
At the White Plains City Center's Cinema de Lux, patrons were scarce except for a few couples and Bob Jones, who put off his laundry plan for a movie.
Rich Keiling was negotiating what to see with his girlfriend Francisca Lima. He was considering watching Super Bowl, but said he chose to have a date night instead.
"The game doesn't mean anything because the Jets and the Giants aren't in it," Keiling said. "The only thing I care about is my football pool and I can check these in tomorrow's paper."
He took his pool grids out of his pocket and unfolded them. "I don't care who wins. I do like the 49ers, I'm just not feeling it this year."
