The day of appreciation recognized and reflected upon a century of care in the community and more importantly, it recognized the staff who make it possible for the Hospital to provide care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.

Among the 1700 person staff that was honored, several longtime employees were highlighted – those who have dedicated more than 20 years of service to NWH.

One of them, Carmela Oliveri, came to the U.S. from Calabria, Italy when she was 13 years old. She has been a part of four different services at NWH for more than 39 years. The hospital was a family affair for the Oliveris; her mother worked in housekeeping for 22 years while her brother and sister were members of the food service team.

Also recognized were Marlou Sanchez and the 14 nurses who were hired by Northern Westchester Hospital from the Philippines in December 1983. When they arrived more than 30 years ago, they came with a completely different skill set, knowledge and language, and worked to be leaders at the hospital today.

The leadership team served lunch to the entire staff and entertainment was provided thanks to a familiar face to many hospital employees. The Mighty Fergusons, whose lead guitarist/vocalist, Dennis Bolger, is an anesthetist in the Operating Department, played live music and were joined by staff member and physician Dr. Ed Kornel.
