For obese individuals, there are many barriers to exercise. Northern Westchester Hospital has taken steps to remove or reduce as many of those barriers as possible. The Alter-G, which is an anti-gravity treadmill, is able to reduce the stress placed on the body by lessening the patient’s weight using NASA-patented technology. As patients run on the treadmill, they're are able to adjust gravity's effects thanks to bubble enclosing their lower half. By reducing the strain on their body, surgical weight loss patients are able to train longer and harder than ever before.

When working out at a fraction of their normal weight, patients, many of whom are unable to exercise at a moderately strenuous rate under normal circumstances, have experienced a remarkable increase in their endurance, overall health and wellbeing, according Dr. Mitchell Roslin, Director of Bariatric Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital. In some instances, the Alter-G has given patients who never though they'd run again the ability to do so.

Northern Westchester Hospital uses this leading-edge technology both before and after weight loss surgeries. In some cases, the treadmill is used as a form of 'prehab' to ready patients for a procedure, while it can be used post-op for others seeking to jump start and maintain a fit lifestyle.
