FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Everyday life can cause plenty of anxiety. Whether it’s stress at work, relationship problems, current events or emotional distress, everyone has been anxious, worried or panicked before. However, the experts at Newport Academy, a teen treatment center with locations across the US, including one in Bethlehem and one in Darien, are helping a growing number of teens overcome this daily sense of fear.

This type of stress is also known as morning anxiety because it often kicks in at the start of each day. For some teens, this means worrying about yesterday's events and what might happen later that day. For others, the symptoms can be much more extreme, and in some cases lead to panic attacks.

"Anxiety in teens is becoming more and more common due to the increased stress placed on adolescents in society," said Kristin Wilson, Director of Clinical Outreach at Newport Academy. "There are ways to combat anxiety, starting as soon as you get out of bed."

According to experts at Newport Academy, anxiety often starts with sleep deprivation. It's important for teens to stick a routine and receive at least eight to 10 hours of sleep a night, and get up promptly the alarm rings.

“It’s during sleep that brain chemicals related to mental health are replenished,” said Wilson. "If you don’t get a good sleep, there’s a greater chance that you’re going to wake up anxious off the bat.”

Setting realistic goals for the day and executing them also give teens a sense of fulfillment. This, in turn, can relieve symptoms of depression, improve resilience and performance in stressful situations and even trigger a beneficial meditative state.

Newport Academy offers a wide variety of other courses designed to keep teens active while reducing anxiety. These include yoga, music therapy, fitness, adventure therapy, martial arts therapy, culinary arts, meditation and more.

"With so much offered at Newport, teens can strive to stop worrying about the past and learn to overcome things that cause them anxiety," said Wilson. The academy's leadership team also works to create an individual treatment plan for each teen to help them begin the morning on a positive note.

"We want our teens to embrace each day with a new and exciting activity," she said. "It's important to have a plan for each day, and to go out and try new things."
