New Orleans may be over a thousand miles away, but area residents can still put on purple and gold clothing and find ways to celebrate Mardi Gras on Tuesday.

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season and is the final day of celebration before the start of the lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday the following day.

The holiday traces its origins to medieval Europe to the French House of the Bourbons. It was held for the first time in North America in 1699.

Today, the holiday is marked by parades, king cake and formal balls.
